McCarthy reaches 1,000 career kills in tri-match sweep

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Catie McCarthy (Warrenton, Va.) of the Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team reached 1,000 career kills on Saturday, powering the Hawks to back-to-back non-league victories on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College.

With a five-set victory over Daemen (12-7) and a 3-1 win against the host Redhawks (1-18), Saint Anselm moves to 14-7 on the year and returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. on the road versus Stonehill.

McCarthy captured her 1,000th career kills in the fourth set of her team's opening contest against Daemen. She exited the day with exactly 1,015 kills across a four-year career on the Hilltop after posting 11 kills versus Daemen and 12 against Roberts Wesleyan. She sits fourth all-time on the career kills list, trailing former teammate Katy Teets '18 with 1,051.

Junior Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) led the attack in both matches, combining for 26 kills. Freshman Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) assisted in 37 of her team's 52 kills against Daemen. Freshman libero Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) totaled 32 digs.

Against the Wildcats, the Hawks took an early 2-0 lead by set scores of 25-21 and 25-18. Saint Anselm started the match with a hitting percentage of over .408 in each of the first two sets. After the Hawks trailed 11-8, Daemen earned four straight points to make it 15-8. Saint Anselm would never come back in the third set for the Wildcats to capture a 25-21 victory.

The Wildcats kept momentum on their side in the fourth set and evened the match up at two with a 25-22 win. After trailing 16-14 in the fourth set, the Hawks went on a 5-2 run, capped by two Jolly kills. That made the score 19-18 in favor of the Hawks. Saint Anselm would hold the lead at two, 22-20, before the Wildcats powered a late come back and posted the final five points including two kills by Sam Logan.

Both teams battled back and forth early in the fifth set as the Hawks held a slim 13-8 advantage following two attacking errors by the Wildcats. Despite trailing by four, Daemen would go on a 7-1 run, giving them a narrow 15-14 lead. That span included five kills by Allison Post. Following a Saint Anselm timeout, the Hawks closed the match with a 5-2 run and won 19-17.

Against the Redhawks, Saint Anselm sprinted out to a 16-4 run in the opening set. The Hawks kept the hosts to only 11 points in the first set to earn a 25-11 win. After the second set was tied at six, the Redhawks earned five straight points and increased their lead to 10-6. Roberts Wesleyan would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the second set and take a 25-19 triumph.

The Hawks responded and jumped to an early 10-4 lead in the third set following a service ace by McCarthy and a Jordan Schamp (Plymouth, Mich.) kill. Later at 18-11, six Saint Anselm kills would close the third set and give the Hawks a 25-15 win. Three of the six kills came from freshman Kam Blaskey (Ventura, Calif.).

Saint Anselm posted its highest hitting percentage in the final stanza (.565) of all four sets against Roberts Wesleyan. The Hawks took an early 8-3 lead following two kills by Jolly and McCarthy. Roberts Wesleyan cut the margin to two after recording the next nine of 15 points to make the score, 14-12. Saint Anselm closed out the match with a 11-3 run, capped by a Lois Dogbe (Winchester, Calif.) kill.
