MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on day two of the Barry University Invitational on Saturday, falling in three sets to Saint Leo and Minnesota State Mankato.
Senior Catie McCarthy (Warrenton, Va.) earned her 800th career kill in the third set against the Mavericks, moving herself up one spot in the all-time list to ninth. Junior Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) registered the lone double-digit kills in a single match for Saint Anselm (0-4). Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) had a match-high 11 digs against Saint Leo. The Lions edged the Hawks in three sets, 25-9, 25-12, 25-11, while Minnesota St. Mankato bested Saint Anselm, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the first set behind three early kills. Saint Leo stretched the lead to 17-4 with a 10-0 run and led by at least 12 the rest of the set, claiming a 25-9 win.
Saint Leo never trailed in the second set as they started with a 10-4 advantage before the Lions mounted a rally to bring the score to 17-7. However, Saint Anselm regrouped and earned three straight points, making it 17-10. Saint Leo surged ahead with an 8-2 run to close the second set, 25-12.
The Hawks grabbed an early 4-2 lead before the Lions unleashed an eight-point unanswered run, thanks to two kills apiece from Anilise Fitzi and Ashley Quero. Saint Anselm cut into the Lions lead to bring the third set to a two-point margin from three-straight McCarthy kills. After that, Saint Leo did not let them back into the match as they finished the set with a 15-3 run. The third set ended with a tally of 25-11.
The second match of the day for the Hawks began with a 7-4 lead early in the first set. Then, the Mavericks of Minnesota St. Mankato strung together five straight points to earn their first lead of the set. Saint Anselm recaptured the lead with an 8-3 stretch to provide the Hawks a 15-12 advantage. After a bad set by Lauren Lowry, Minnesota St. Mankato came back to score the next 13 of 19 points and took a first-set lead with a narrow 25-21 win.
Minnesota St. Mankato led the entire way in set number two to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Mavericks stretched a 14-11 lead to 25-18 with a 11-7 run, earning the second set victory. The teams were tied at 10-10 midway through the third set before Saint Anselm rattled off eight of the next 13 points to take a narrow 18-15 lead. The Mavericks generated a late 10-1 charge in pursuit of winning the set and match.
Saint Anselm has an entire week to prepare for its next matchup as they travel to the Post Invitational starting on Saturday, Sept. 14.
