MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 loss to visiting Lebanon Valley College in the Hawks season opener on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
Lebanon Valley improved to 1-0 on the early year with the Hawks falling to 0-1. Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they host Worcester State for a 4 p.m. matchup.
The Dutchmen came out early in the first period with a goal by Matt Emerick at 1:38. Lebanon Valley kept the momentum going in the first period as Tino Alunni buried a power-play goal at 14:49 of the period.
Less than a minute into the second stanza, the Dutchmen increased their lead to 3-0 from a Felix Takacsi-Nagy goal on a power-play opportunity.
Senior Ryan Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) ended the Dutchmen's chance for a shutout later in the second period. Off a scrum near the outside of the crease, Spillane found the loose puck on the left side and sent a shot into the back of the twine.
Neither team could find the offense to score in the third period which resulted in a Lebanon Valley win.
In net, sophomore Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) stopped 20 shots in his first start of the 2019-20 season. Henry Burns of Lebanon Valley posted 30 saves en route to his first victory of the year. Junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.) both had a team-high eight faceoff wins.
