MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team began its fall season by defeating Plymouth State University 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at South Tennis Courts.
In total, seven different players were part of match wins for Saint Anselm (1-0), led by Tess Malerbi and Kayla Hodas, who were each victorious in both singles and doubles. The Hawks claimed two of the three doubles matches and went on to win five of the six singles matches to down Plymouth State (1-1).
Saint Anselm opened the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a lead into singles play. Malerbi and Meghan Golden teamed up for an 8-1 victory at the top spot, while the pair of Eleni Petromelis and Kayla Hodas edged Lily O'Connor and Sydney Welch by a 9-7 margin at the third spot. The Panthers claimed a point at No. 2 doubles behind an 8-4 victory by Megan Wheeler and Chloe Knapp.
The Hawks dropped just three games in five straight-set singles victories with Knapp providing the Panthers' lone win at No. 4 singles. Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, while Malerbi, Hodas and Maikah Bulpitt dropped just one game apiece in their singles wins.
Bulpitt's win at No. 6 singles was the first of her collegiate career in her first collegiate match, while Hodas picked up her first two career victories on the day. Petromelis' gathered her first collegiate victory with Hodas in doubles.
Saint Anselm begins Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 16 when Le Moyne visits Manchester for a 12 p.m. match.
