OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team held a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) outscored the Hawks 25-13 in the fourth to record a 77-71 non-conference victory on Tuesday evening at Recreation Hall.
With 5:41 remaining, Saint Anselm (7-5) was on top, 67-63, before NYIT (8-4) scored 14 of the game's final 18 points to defeat the Hawks for the second-straight season. The Hawks posted their second-highest field-goal percentage on the season, shooting 51.8 percent for the game, but the Bears hit seven three-pointers in the second half to rally for the win.
Sophomore Shannon Ryan recorded her seventh double-double in 12 games this season, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Hawks offensively. After a season-high 18-point outing on Saturday, senior Ali Glennon shot 7-for-11 from the field on her way to 17 points. Sophomore Sara Messler contributed 10 points and five boards, while freshmen Peyton Steinman and Grace Guachione combined for 15 off the bench.
Freshman Taylor Triptree scored 19 of her game-high 21 points in the second half for NYIT, including going 5-for-5 from behind the arc after halftime. Fellow freshman Shalie Frierson had 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals for the Bears, who had just six players score in the game. Graduate student Maia Hood scored an efficient 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds as well.
After Glennon scored the game's first bucket with a layup, NYIT took charge early with an 11-1 run, holding the Hawks to a single point in a five-minute stretch. The Bears took a 17-10 lead into the second quarter after Frierson scored six points in the opening 10 minutes. Steinman and Glennon did all the scoring for the Hawks in the quarter, pouring in five points apiece.
A Nina Vukosavljevic three-pointer to start the second stretched the Bears' lead to 20-12, but the Hawks responded with a 10-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to claim a 22-20 lead. A three from Guachione capped a 9-0 run by the Hawks to break a 24-24 tie and Glennon sent Saint Anselm into the half with a 39-32 lead with a layup in the closing seconds of the opening half. The Hawks put up 29 points in the second quarter, closing the half on an extended 27-12 run.
After NYIT closed the gap to three, 45-42, four minutes into the third quarter, Saint Anselm rattled off nine-straight points to take a 12-point advantage with 4:12 left in the third. The Bears cut the 12-point deficit in half at the end of three, making four-of-five shots in the late stages of the quarter.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Tripptree 46 seconds apart gave the Bears a 63-62 lead, their first lead since 20-18 ,with exactly 7:00 left in the fourth. Ryan put Saint Anselm back on top with a layup off a Guachione assist to start a quick 5-0 run. Hood put back her own miss with 3:08 left to swing the lead back in NYIT's favor, 70-69, with 3:40 left and Tripptree drained a three the next time down the floor to up the lead to four. A Glennon jumper got it back to a two-point game with 1:58 remaining, but that was the final points of the game for the Hawks, as Vukosavljevic scored the game's final four to held the Bears close out the come-from-behind victory.
Saint Anselm, which is 4-0 in games this season following a loss, will look to continue that trend after a 10-day break when the Hawks host Daemen on Friday, Dec. 29 at 12 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
