Top-ranked softball splits a pair of 1-0 games with LIU Post

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College softball team split its doubleheader against the Pioneers from LIU Post on Sunday afternoon. LIU Post took game one by a score of 1-0 while the Hawks took game two by the same score.

The Hawks, who are ranked first in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll, move to 7-3 on the year. The Pioneers open their season with a 1-1 record. The games were a rematch of the 2018 Super Regionals from last year in which Saint Anselm won both games in Manchester, N.H. to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships.

In game one, junior pitcher Morgan Perry (Bethany, Conn.) went the distance and had a career-high 13 strikeouts in the game and issued zero walks. LIU Post had an RBI single in their half of the sixth inning, accounting for the game's lone run.

The Hawks flipped the script in the second game as an RBI single by junior Shannon Colson (Rochester, N.H.) in the fifth inning drove home the only run of the final contest. She now has 97 career hits in 99 games on the Hilltop after finishing with four hits on the day, two in each game.

Game one was a pitching duel between Perry and Pioneers starter Katie Humhej. Perry allowed just one hit through the first five innings and struck out nine batters in that span.

However, a leadoff double in the sixth by Allie Laird hurt the Hawks as she came around to score two batters later on an RBI single by Julia Seader to give LIU Post the 1-0 edge.

The Hawks had a chance in the first inning, placing runners on second and third and two outs, but Humhej got the last batter to look at strike three to end the frame. Saint Anselm also left the bases loaded in the second inning.

Colson led the offense in game one with two hits, including a double. Perry suffered the loss in game one while Humhej secured the Pioneers' first victory of the year. She has seven strikeouts over seven innings of work while scattering six hits.

Neither team had great opportunities until the top of the fifth inning for the Hawks. Sophomore Kat Stackrow (Wynantskill, N.Y.) began the inning with a single before advancing to second on a single by freshman Bailey Cain (Wellington, Fla.). Both runners moved up a bag on a sacrifice bunt before Colson singled, scoring Stackrow.

Perry started the game for Saint Anselm, allowing just one hit over two-and-a-third innings of work. Sophomore Courtney Fisher (Taunton, Mass.) silenced the bats from LIU Post to pick up her third win of the season. She went four-and-two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit and no walks. Hannah Olshevski suffered the complete game loss for the Pioneers, yielding just one earned run on six hits while fanning four batters.

Stackrow and Colson each had a pair of hits for the Hawks in game two.

The Hawks enjoy a day off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday, Mar. 5 for two games. The first contest is against Georgian Court at 1:45 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest against Gannon.
