Hennequin, Perry pitch softball to sweep at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass.Sam Hennequin and Morgan Perry each turned in strong performances in the circle to lead the Saint Anselm College softball team to a road sweep of Bentley University by 4-1 and 2-0 scores in Northeast Divisional play in the Northeast-10 Conference on Saturday at Bentley Softball Field.

After allowing a first-inning run, Hennequin held Bentley (8-20, 4-13 NE10, 2-11 NE10 NE) scoreless over the final six innings as Saint Anselm (12-13, 10-7 NE10, 9-4 NE10 NE) put together a seventh-inning rally to take game one, 4-1.

Hennequin improved to 8-5 on the season by limiting the Falcons to the single run on five hits over a complete game. The senior walked one and struck out four on the afternoon.

The top of the order did most of the damage for Saint Anselm offensively, led by a 3-for-4, two-run performance from Amanda Bickford. Maggie Murphy was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base out of the third spot in the lineup.

Hannah King went the distance for Bentley, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts, but fell to 5-12. Five batters had one hit apiece for the Falcons.

Bentley tallied two of its five hits off Hennequin in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. After the leadoff hitter was retired, Katelyn Lebreux singled to shortstop and came around to score on a double down the left-field line off the bat of Kelsey Kennedy. The Hawks tied the game in the top of the third as Murphy delivered a two-out RBI single to score Bickford, who had doubled with one out.

Saint Anselm had a chance to go ahead in the fourth but King left two runners in scoring position by retiring the final two hitters of the inning. Hennequin escaped trouble in the bottom of the fifth by getting Kennedy to pop out to shortstop with runners on second and third with two outs.

The score remained locked at 1-1 until the top of the seventh when Saint Anselm put up a decisive three-spot. A walk to pinch hitter Ellie Parravano and singles by Bickford and Michaela Kane loaded the bases with nobody out before Murphy made it three-straight singles by plating Jordan O'Connor with a single to right. Two batters later, Erin Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and two runs scored on an error.

Perry hurled a two-hit shutout to outduel Bentley's Kelsey Smith as the Hawks claimed the sweep with a 2-0 win in the nightcap. Perry's shutout was her second in her last three starts, as the freshman walked two and fanned four for her fourth victory of the season. Smith gave up just five hits and struck out 10 in the circle for Bentley but suffered the loss.

Megan Murrell was 2-for-3 with a walk and the deciding two-run single in the third inning for the Hawks. Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI and stole her 10th base of the season, which is the most by a Saint Anselm player since 2012 (Lauren Galavotti – 10).

Smith escaped an early jam, using a pair of strikeouts to leave the bases loaded in the top of the second. Saint Anselm got to Smith in its next at-bat, scoring the game's lone two runs in the third. With Murphy on second and Bickford on third with one out, Murrell drove both runners in with a single up the middle for her seventh multi-RBI game of the season.

Perry took care of the rest, allowing just five baserunners in the game. The only time Bentley got a runner in scoring position came in the fourth. Kennedy led off with an infield single and moved up a base each on a pair of groundouts, but Perry got Jordan Ballantyne to fly out to center to end the inning. Perry retired 11 of the final 12 batters of the game after the Kennedy single.

The two teams play two more on Sunday, April 23, beginning at noon at Bentley Softball Field. The first game will complete the team's three-game regular-season series and game two will be a non-conference game.
