MANCHESTER, N.H. – 12 different players recorded at least one point as the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-2 victory over American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Grappone Stadium in Manchester, N.H.
The Hawks improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NE10, while AIC drops to 0-8 and 0-3 in conference games. Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday afternoon in a 4 p.m. matchup with #10 Adelphi University.
Mark Vitello had a five-point day with four goals and an assist, while Patrick Sweeney matched him with four tallies in the game. Anthony Busconi and Ryan Hesseltine added two goals apiece, while James Olsen and Xavier Quinn had a goal and two assists each.
Freshman James Righini and Matt Johnson recorded a goal and an assist apiece, with Dylan Ryan and John Maginnis also finding the back of the net. Alex Pacitti and Aaron Palys rounded out the point-getters for the Hawks, each recording an assist.
Defensively, Lucas DeAngelo earned his first win of the season while making three saves. Nick Richard replaced him at half time and made five saves in just over 25 minutes of action, while Jeremy Lewis played the last 4:56 of the game.
Brennan Quackenbush caused five turnovers and scooped up five groundballs to lead the Saint Anselm defense. James Olsen and Oliver Ouellet had four groundballs apiece, while Xavier Quinn and Teo Olsen added three groundballs apiece.
The Yellow Jackets received goals from Quinn Caesar and Colton Larkin, with John Magliano assisting on both tallies. Matt Sayegh recorded 14 saves in the setback in goal.
The Hawks held a 59-14 edge in shots in the game, and committed only 25 turnovers to 39 for AIC. Saint Anselm also held a 40-25 edge in groundballs, while going 20-for-25 on clears compared to just 9-for-26 from the Yellow Jackets. Face-offs were even at 12 wins apiece, and the Hawks went 2-for-2 on the man advantage with AIC going only 1-for-6 on the power play.
Saint Anselm opened the game on a 9-0 run before the Yellow Jackets found the back of the net with 4:04 to play in the second quarter. Olsen answered with a tally in the final minute to make it a 10-1 game headed into the break.
The third quarter was all Saint Anselm as the Hawks scored five goals in the period to extend their lead to 15-1. The home team scored the first two goals of the fourth period before AIC found the back of the net with just over two minutes to play. James Righini's first collegiate tally would prove to be the final tally of the game as the Hawks cruised to the 18-2 victory.
