EASTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team suffered a tough 5-4 setback to Stonehill College on Monday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in Easton, Mass.
The Hawks drop to 11-31 overall and 5-21 in the NE10 and wrap up the 2017 season in a matchup with Saint Michael's hopefully to be played sometime in the next few days. Stonehill improves to 15-26 and 9-13 in league games.
Nick Bragole and Max Wadington each went 2-for-4, while Wadington scored a run. Matthew Flynn, Tyler McKeon and Jason Turner each went 1-for-5, while Connor Parent was 1-for-3 and Aaron Crandall was 1-for-4.
Adam Krol pitched well in the defeat, tossing 8.1 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Skyhawks were led by Alex Hurley, who went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ben Monte added a 2-for-5 day, while Steve Lee was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI scored. Pat Shore earned the victory in relief of Aran Hamilton-Grenham, pitching the final 2.1 innings and only giving up three walks.
Stonehill took an early 3-0 lead through the game's first three innings as Alex Hurley doubled home a run in the second and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Matthew Rocco to make it a 2-0 game. Steve Lee would tack on the third run of the game for the Skyhawks by picking up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the sixth, Max Wadington and Nick Bragole led off the inning with singles before Dan Bodi reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Jason Turner singled home Wadington to make it a 3-2 game, and the Hawks loaded the bases when Connor Parent was hit by a pitch.
Stonehill tied the game in their half of the eighth as they loaded bases on a hit batsmen, an infield single and an error. Alexander Joyce tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly, and Adam Krol avoided any more damage by striking out the final two batters of the inning.
In the ninth, the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs as Wadington, Bragole and Bodi all earned free passes, but the rally would end there as the Skyhawks got a force-out at second to end the inning.
John Orzechowski led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple, and Eddie Bowler drove in the game-winning run, hitting the ball over the glove of the left fielder, to help the Skyhawks walk off with the 5-4 win.
