Baseball’s rally falls short at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team scored three times in the top of the ninth, but Assumption College was able to hang on for a 6-4 victory over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in Worcester, Mass.

The Hawks fall to 10-25 and 5-15 in the NE10, while Assumption moves to 15-19 and 8-11 in league games.

Andre Gaudet and Jason Turner each went 2-for-4 with a run, while Matthew Flynn went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI. John Marculitis was also 1-for-4 and added an RBI, with Nick Bragole adding a 1-for-4 day with a run scored. Connor Parent and Mike Goddu were each 1-for-1 in their at-bats, with Parent adding a run and an RBI.

Joseph Levasseur pitched seven innings and gave up six runs (five earned) with a pair of walks and six strikeouts in the defeat. Elijah Fish pitched the eighth inning, allowing a walk while striking out a pair.

Assumption's Andrew Jaehnig went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Greyhounds offensively. Jake Byrne also added a 2-for-4 day with a run and an RBI. Tom Horstkotte picked up his third win of the season, giving up one run on four hits with a pair of walks and 15 strikeouts in eight innings of work. Manny PegueroMelo gave up three runs on five hits while pitching the ninth inning.

The Hawks opened the game taking a 1-0 lead as Bragole doubled to the gap in left center before John Marculitis drove him in with an RBI single through the left side. Assumption answered in their half of the inning as Jake Byrne drove in Jaehnig with an RBI single to left center.

Assumption added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Jaehnig and Byrne singled to lead off the inning before RJ Libby doubled to drive in Jaehnig. Byrne would later come in to score on a wild pitch as the Greyhounds took a 3-1 advantage.

The Greyhounds added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings on an RBI double from Jaehnig as well as RBI singles from Mike Schmidt and Jaehnig.

Jason Turner started the rally in the ninth with a one out single to left center. Turner moved his way to third after two wild pitches, as Connor Parent dug in with two outs in the frame. Parent came through with a single to left to drive in a run, and Andre Gaudet and Mike Goddu followed with singles to load the bases. Matthew Flynn drove in a pair with a single to left center to make it a 6-4 game and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position.

Unfortunately, the rally ended there as PegueroMelo forced the final batter he faced to fly out to center to end the game.
