GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team rebounded from an 8-0 setback in game one to post an 8-2 win over Adelphi University in game two to gain a doubleheader split with the Panthers on Saturday afternoon in Garden City, N.Y.
The Hawks finish the day at 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the NE10, while Adelphi moved to 11-7 and 1-1 in league games. Saint Anselm is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Pace University for a conference twin bill starting at 12 p.m.
Game One – Adelphi 8, Saint Anselm 0
The Saint Anselm offense was held to only five hits in the game as the Panthers took the opener, 8-0. Nick Bragole went 2-for-4, while Aaron Crandall and Jon McQuarrie each went 1-for-3 on the day. Tyler McKeon also added a hit in the game.
Autrey Gates suffered the setback for the Hawks, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts over six innings of work. Max Hall tossed the final two innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on three hits.
Adelphi's TJ Santiago pitched a complete game and struck out 11 Hawks in the win. He was backed by an offense that produced eight runs on 12 hits, led by a 3-for-4 day with an RBI and two runs scored from his battery-mate Kory Cassara.
Game Two – Saint Anselm 8, Adelphi 2
In the second half of the twin bill, the Saint Anselm bats woke up as the Hawks scored eight runs on 13 hits to post the 8-2 victory. Nick Bragole and Dan Bodi each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Max Wadington also went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Matthew Flynn had a 2-for-4 day with a run and an RBI, while Jon McQuarrie was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
On the mound, Adam Krol picked up the win while scattering seven hits and allowing only two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Jared Ferris followed with another scoreless outing, giving up only one hit in 2.1 innings.
Saint Anselm scored four times in the top of the second with Jon McQuarrie getting it started with an RBI single through the left side that scored Bragole. A wild pitch allowed Bodi to score, and an RBI groundout from Liam O'Sullivan gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Flynn rounded out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left center that scored McQuarrie.
Adelphi got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Eric Hassell to make it a 4-1 game, but both offenses went quiet over the next two innings.
In the top of the sixth, three-straight singles from Bragole, Bodi and Crandall to lead off the inning gave the Hawks a 5-1 lead as Crandall's hit drove in Bragole. After John Marculitis was intentionally walked to load the bases, McQuarrie drove in a run with a sac fly and O'Sullivan followed with an RBI single to center to put Saint Anselm in front 7-1.
Adelphi threatened in the bottom of the seventh as the Panthers loaded the bases against Krol with two outs in the inning. Ferris came on and allowed a run to score on a walk, but got the final out of the inning on a groundout to end the threat and keep the Hawks ahead, 7-2.
